FROM rapper to writer

More than how I got to where I am today, what should represent me is my dedication to using my privilege to help create pathways for people of color in the creative and corporate world.

That brings me to rapping…

My career in the creative field began when I was 12. Before I knew what copy or Zen or ego or clients or creative departments were, I was memorizing Eminem lyrics. I rapped every day all the way through college, where I was exposed to artistic communities made up of people from all races and backgrounds.

I was lucky enough to land an internship at an ad agency without having studied it in college (I was an English and Creative Writing student). I begged the CD at that agency to look at my portfolio for 6 months until he finally gave in, and I became a copywriter.

Creative led to content, and content led to UX. But along the way I realized that rapping taught me more than just writing. I learned how to perform. To present. To pitch work. Honing my presentation skills helped me see that real power comes from inspiring others. And now I know that helping others achieve great work is often more satisfying than achieving great work.

My work always comes back to my faith. Having something greater to believe in, has helped me stayed grounded through the ups and downs of advertising life.
